Sony Group's chip unit and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. have agreed to cooperate on next-generation image sensor development and manufacturing, according to Japan Today. Nippon.com reported that Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding for the strategic partnership on May 8, 2026.

Key developments

  • The companies are looking at a joint venture in which Sony would hold the majority stake. Japan Today reported that Sony would be the majority and controlling shareholder, while Nippon.com said the companies will consider establishing the venture and adding development and production lines.

  • The planned work centers on Sony's semiconductor plant in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture. The southwestern Japan location is already important to Japan's chip strategy: TSMC has two factories in Kumamoto, including one that began mass production in December 2024 using 12- to 28-nanometer technology for automotive and image sensor applications.

  • The partnership is meant to combine Sony's sensor-design strengths with TSMC's process technology and manufacturing scale. Sony Group President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said the move is part of efforts to strengthen Sony's position as the global leader in image sensors, Nippon.com reported.

  • The target markets go beyond smartphones. Japan Today said image sensors are used in products such as smartphones and dashboard cameras, while both reports pointed to growth areas including autonomous driving, robotics, and physical AI applications. Japan Today also cited a forecast that Sony will hold 56 percent of global image sensor market revenue in fiscal 2025.

  • The agreement follows Japanese government support for Sony's sensor business. Japan Today reported that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced in April that it would provide up to 60 billion yen in subsidies to help mass-produce cutting-edge sensors.

What to watch

The biggest unresolved point is whether the nonbinding MOU becomes a definitive joint venture agreement. The reports do not specify investment totals, production capacity, a mass-production start date, or final ownership terms beyond Sony's expected majority role.

The Koshi project will also be watched alongside TSMC's broader Kumamoto buildout. If Sony and TSMC move from agreement to construction and production planning, the next updates should clarify how quickly the new sensor lines can support demand from automotive, robotics, AI, and camera-related markets.
