Sony Targets Record 1.16 Trillion Yen Profit for FY2026

Sony Group said on May 8, 2026 that it expects net income attributable to stockholders of 1.16 trillion yen for FY2026, the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, according to its financial summary and Nippon.com/Jiji Press. If achieved, the forecast would mark a record profit, even after Sony reported a lower profit result for the year through March 2026.

Key developments

  • Sony's official forecast points to a mixed top line and stronger earnings: sales of 12.3 trillion yen, down 1.4%, operating income of 1.6 trillion yen, up 10.5%, and net income attributable to Sony Group Corporation's stockholders of 1.16 trillion yen, up 12.5%.

  • The FY2025 base was uneven. Sony reported continuing-operations sales of about 12.48 trillion yen, up 3.7%, and operating income of about 1.45 trillion yen, up 13.4%, but net income attributable to stockholders slipped 3.4% to about 1.03 trillion yen. AP reported that the decline reflected factors including the end of the Sony Honda Mobility electric-vehicle launch plan and higher chip costs.

  • Sony's own presentation says FY2026 operating income growth is expected to come mainly from Game & Network Services, even as segment sales are forecast to fall. The company cited expected gains from first-party game software and the absence of large FY2025 Bungie impairment losses in its earnings presentation.

  • Sony also approved a shareholder-return move: up to 230 million shares may be repurchased for as much as 500 billion yen between May 11, 2026 and May 10, 2027.

What to watch

The central test is whether Sony can expand profit while sales decline. The company's forecast depends on game-margin improvement, continued entertainment strength, and a better profit mix in imaging sensors, while its own materials flag softer hardware sales and weaker mobile sensor sales as offsets.

Sony cautions that forecasts are forward-looking and subject to risks. The next updates to watch are early FY2026 segment results, especially PlayStation software performance, Pictures releases, sensor demand for mobile products and digital cameras, memory-cost pressure, and the pace of the buyback.
