Johnny Somali Sentenced to Six Months in South Korea Prison

American YouTuber Johnny Somali (real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael) was sentenced to six months in prison by a Seoul court on April 15, 2026, after being found guilty of all charges filed against him, including public nuisance offenses and the distribution of AI-generated sexual content.

Key developments

  • The Seoul Western District Court, presided over by Judge Park Gee-won, issued the verdict following proceedings first initiated with an indictment in November 2024. The sentencing hearing had been scheduled for March 2025 but was delayed after prosecutors added deepfake-related charges under South Korea's Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

  • Somali, 25, was convicted of a series of disruptive incidents in October 2024 in Seoul's Mapo District: blasting North Korean propaganda music in public spaces, spilling cup noodle broth at a convenience store, boarding buses and subway cars to play loud music, and approaching passersby with a foul-smelling bag of fish. He was also seen broadcasting himself making sexually suggestive gestures at the Statue of Peace — a memorial honoring victims of wartime sexual slavery — via YouTube livestream.

  • The deepfake charge — distributing a sexually explicit AI-generated video featuring himself alongside a Korean female YouTuber — carried the heaviest penalty under Korean law. According to Dexerto, Somali contested this charge throughout the proceedings, arguing that another Korean creator shared the same content without facing prosecution. The court found the evidence supported all charges.

  • In addition to the six-month custodial sentence and 20 days of detention, the court imposed a five-year ban on Somali from working at institutions serving minors and people with disabilities. Prosecutors had originally sought a three-year prison term; the court cited the absence of severe harm to victims as a factor in handing down the lighter sentence. Somali was taken into custody immediately after the verdict. Speaking to reporters before the hearing, he said he was remorseful and wished to apologize to the Korean people.

What to watch

The verdict represents a first-trial ruling. Whether Somali's legal team files an appeal has not been confirmed. Dexerto reported he will serve his sentence at a specialized labor facility where his phone will be confiscated and he will carry offender status upon release.

The case also raises questions about post-sentence immigration consequences — including any potential re-entry ban — that Korean authorities may impose once Somali completes his term. No official statement on that matter has been issued.
