Japan on April 29, 2026 announced its spring honors list, recognizing 3,875 people for contributions across public life, according to Nippon.com's English report. A more detailed Japanese version of the same report says the list includes animation director Yoshiyuki Tomino and manga artist Machiko Satonaka, while an official MLIT notice confirms the honors were approved by cabinet on April 21 and formally issued on April 29.
Key developments
-
The domestic honors total breaks down into 853 recipients of the Order of the Rising Sun and 3,022 recipients of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, for 3,875 overall. Women accounted for 445 recipients, or 11.5% of the total, according to the Japanese report.
-
Among the most recognizable cultural names, Tomino, known for the Mobile Suit Gundam series, and Satonaka, known for works including Aries no Otometachi, were both named to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. Contemporary artist Yasumasa Morimura was also listed for a spring honor.
-
The highest-profile political recipients included former Internal Affairs Minister Tsutomu Sato, former Education Minister Masaharu Nakagawa, former Health Minister Takumi Nemoto, and former Wakayama Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka, all selected for the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. Former Cabinet Legislation Bureau commissioner Masaharu Kondo was chosen for the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure.
-
The same Nippon.com report says 94 people in 48 countries and regions were also recognized in the foreign honors category. On the process side, ministry releases issued alongside the Cabinet Office announcement show that ceremony scheduling is already under way, with top-rank events beginning on May 12 and MLIT setting its own handover ceremony for May 14.
What to watch
The next official milestones are the May ceremony dates. Nippon.com says the emperor will begin meeting recipients at the Imperial Palace from May 12 onward, and ministry-level transfer ceremonies are following shortly after. That means the story is likely to shift from the headline names to the broader recipient rosters over the next two weeks.
Another thing to watch is which lesser-known honorees gain public attention once more ministry and sector-specific recipient lists circulate. Early coverage has focused on politics and pop culture, but the published rosters already point to a much wider spread of awards across administration, transport, education, business, and local service.
