Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said in its April 6 updates that the 2026 World Health Day theme is Together for Health, Stand with Science. The ministry said the campaign calls on governments, scientists, healthcare workers, partners and the public to act on scientific evidence, using a One Health approach that links human, animal and environmental health.
Key developments
- MHLW says World Health Day commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization on April 7, 1948, and that WHO selects a global health theme each year. For 2026, the ministry says the campaign is intended to protect lives, rebuild trust and help secure a healthier future by turning scientific knowledge into action.
- In its summary of the theme, the ministry places the campaign against cross-border health risks including emerging and re-emerging infections, antimicrobial resistance and climate change. It says Japan is strengthening surveillance and crisis-management systems and cites cross-ministry coordination on zoonotic disease issues such as avian influenza, alongside international cooperation on universal health coverage and public-health preparedness.
- Separate ministry notices show related health-policy activity this spring. On April 6, MHLW said it had compiled the 2026 Health Scoring Report implementation policy after reviewing 2025 results. On April 1, it announced that the 2026 Basic Survey of Living Conditions would run from mid-April through July, with about 55,000 households covered in the household survey and about 13,000 in the income survey.
What to watch
The World Health Day page does not set out a fuller domestic event calendar, so the next official detail to monitor is whether MHLW or WHO publishes campaign materials, participation guidance or follow-up policy notices tied to the 2026 theme.
More concrete updates are already scheduled in the living-conditions survey timetable. MHLW says household listing begins in mid-April, household questionnaires are distributed in late May with collection from June 4, and income questionnaires follow in early July. The ministry says the survey results will be published in summer 2027, making that one of the next major official reference points for health and welfare policy data.
