DIR EN GREY has taken MORTAL DOWNER from announcement to release with a broader rollout across Japanese music media and retail channels. The band’s 12th album went on sale on April 8, 2026, and the campaign around it has included revised track details, a release-day interview, store events, and cafe collaborations in multiple Japanese cities.
What happened
On January 30, 2026, Gekirock reported that DIR EN GREY had fixed April 8, 2026 as the release date for MORTAL DOWNER. At that stage, the band said the album was planned to include 13 songs, including the 2024 single “The Devil In Me.” The same report said limited editions would add live audio from the band’s 2025 U.S. tour, and that the complete limited version would also include video from the December 10, 2025 Zepp Haneda finale of “TOUR25 蜿蜒.”
A later Gekirock update on March 19, 2026 published the jacket artwork and a fuller tracklist. That report listed 14 songs on the main album, including “The Devil In Me” and “no end,” and gave a more detailed breakdown of the standard, limited, and Blu-ray/DVD editions.
By April 3, 2026, TOWER RECORDS had announced release-linked cafe takeout collaborations tied to MORTAL DOWNER in Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Depending on the location, those campaigns were scheduled from April 7 or April 10 through April 26.
On the release day itself, April 8, 2026, Gekirock reported that guitarist Die had taken part in a new interview and video message connected to the album launch. That same update also pointed to July 18 and July 19, 2026 shows at Tokyo Garden Theater under the title “DIR EN GREY MORTAL DOWNER,” with an advance ticket lottery for album buyers running through April 19.
Why this matters
For foreigners in Japan, this is the kind of domestic music story that often develops through Japanese-language media, retailer notices, and event pages rather than mainstream English-language coverage. That means key details such as release formats, store bonuses, event dates, and ticket application windows can be easy to miss without tracking local sources.
The MORTAL DOWNER rollout is also notable because it ties together Japan-based retail campaigns and material from the band’s overseas activity, including live recordings from 2025 U.S. shows. For international fans living in Japan, or visitors trying to follow Japan’s music scene more closely, that makes the release relevant beyond the album itself. It also shows how major Japanese rock releases can be packaged around purchases, limited editions, in-store appearances, and short promotional windows.
