Classi Absorbed by Benesse as Japan High School EdTech Merger Takes Effect

Japan's high school edtech platform Classi was formally absorbed by Benesse Corporation on April 1, 2026, completing a long-anticipated integration that folds Classi's AI-driven learning tools into Benesse's wider educational services business.

Key developments

  • Classi ceases as an independent company. The absorption-type merger took effect on April 1, 2026. Classi, which launched in April 2014 as a joint venture between Benesse Holdings and SoftBank, operated as a standalone entity for over a decade before the deal was finalised. According to Classi's official merger notice, all existing contracts, service terms, and pricing carry over to Benesse with no action required from current school users.

  • Platform scale at merger. At the time of consolidation, Classi served more than 2.1 million students and teachers across more than 3,000 junior and senior high schools in Japan. Its cloud platform provided portfolio management, assignment distribution, parent-teacher communication, and AI-assisted personalised learning workflows.

  • AI features expanded before the handover. In the run-up to the merger, Classi shipped several AI capabilities. A test-score-linked task distribution feature — released in late 2024 — analyses students' recent exam results and learning goals to automatically generate tailored assignments, reducing manual workload for teachers. Subject coverage was broadened to include the new Information I subject alongside mathematics, Japanese, English, science, and social studies.

  • National policy context. Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT) moved in parallel: its 2025 curriculum revision saw 48 high school textbooks across eight subject areas incorporate generative AI content — a sharp increase from the single title in the prior edition — reflecting a nationwide push to embed AI literacy at the secondary level.

What to watch

The immediate question is how Benesse will integrate Classi's technology stack with its own portfolio of educational products, which spans print and digital content from early childhood through university entrance preparation. It is not yet confirmed whether Classi's AI personalisation tools will be extended to younger grade levels or combined with Benesse's own tutoring services.

Ongoing concerns about data governance are also worth tracking. As Classi's student learning analytics now sit under a larger corporate structure, schools and parents may seek clearer guidance on how that data is used, shared, and protected under Benesse's policies going forward.
