A fireworks factory explosion in Liuyang, Hunan province, has killed 26 people and injured 61, according to reports carried by Japan Today and The Japan Times. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for rescue efforts, treatment for the injured and accountability as authorities investigate the cause.

Key developments

  • The blast occurred at about 4:43 p.m. on Monday at Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company in Liuyang, a city administered by Changsha in central China’s Hunan province. Officials said Tuesday that the toll had risen from earlier reports of 21 deaths to 26.

  • Hunan authorities ordered fireworks makers in Changsha to halt production ahead of safety inspections, according to CCTV reporting cited by Japan Today. The Japan Times, citing Reuters and state media, reported that nearby areas were evacuated because of black powder stored in two warehouses at the compound.

  • Emergency crews were sent to the site as responders searched rubble and worked to control hazards. CCTV footage described by Japan Today showed smoldering debris, damaged buildings and rescue workers using excavators a day after the explosion.

  • Police apprehended the company’s management while the investigation continues. Changsha Mayor Chen Bozhang said search and rescue work was “basically complete” and expressed grief and remorse at a Tuesday news conference.

Liuyang is a major center for fireworks manufacturing. Japan Today reported that the city produces around 60% of fireworks sold inside China and about 70% of those exported, underscoring why a production halt and safety review could draw national attention.

What to watch

The next major update is expected from investigators determining what triggered the blast and whether safety violations contributed to the disaster. Xi has called for those responsible to be held accountable, but officials had not announced a cause in the available reports.

Authorities may also clarify how long the Changsha-area production suspension will last and whether inspections expand beyond the fireworks sector. The incident follows other fatal fireworks-related explosions in China, keeping scrutiny on hazardous-material storage, factory oversight and local enforcement.
