7-Eleven Japan’s new fried takoyaki is now rolling out as a hot-counter item, with the chain offering three-piece and six-piece packs from April 21, according to SoraNews24 and 7-Eleven product listings. The launch puts a freshly prepared convenience-store version of octopus dumplings into direct comparison with specialist takoyaki chains.
Key developments
-
The product is cooked in-store. SoraNews24 reported that the dumplings begin frozen, then are fried by staff after ordering or for the hot snack case. The chain’s listing describes the item as fried takoyaki with a soft, melty texture and dashi-forward flavor.
-
Pricing is positioned for impulse snacking. The three-piece pack is listed at 198 yen before tax, or 213.84 yen including tax, while the six-piece pack is 396 yen before tax, or 427.68 yen including tax. That works out to about 71 yen per piece for the six-pack.
-
7-Eleven is leaning on convenience, not tradition. Instead of the full street-stall topping set, the product comes with takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise. SoraNews24 noted that bonito flavor is built into the batter through dashi rather than added as flakes on top.
-
Early taste testing put it close to Gindaco. In SoraNews24’s comparison, 7-Eleven’s takoyaki weighed about 30 grams per piece, close to Gindaco’s 31 grams. The outlet found the flavor broadly similar, while noting Gindaco’s octopus had more bite and its bonito flakes changed the texture.
What to watch
The immediate question is availability. Although the product is being rolled out broadly, 7-Eleven’s own listings caution that individual stores may not carry every item and that sales timing can vary by location. Demand could also affect whether shoppers find it in the hot snack case or need to order it at the counter.
It is also not yet clear whether this becomes a long-term fixture or a limited hot-counter experiment. If sales hold up, the launch could expand what customers expect from convenience-store fried foods beyond chicken, pork buns, and croquettes.
